In this follow-up to the acclaimed military science fiction thriller The Cold Between, a young soldier finds herself caught in the crosshairs of a deadly conspiracy in deep space.
Six weeks ago Commander Elena Shaw and Captain Greg Foster were court-martialed for their role in an event Central Gov denies ever happened. Yet instead of a dishonorable discharge or time in a military prison, Shaw and Foster and are now back together on Galileo. As punishment they've been assigned to patrol the nearly empty space of the Third Sector.
But their mundane mission quickly turns treacherous when the Galileo picks up a distress call Exeter, a sister ship, is under attack from raiders. A PSI generation ship - the same one that recently broke off negotiations with Foster - is also in the sector and joins in the desperate battle that leaves 97 of Exeter's crew dead.
An investigation of the disaster points to sabotage. And Exeter is only the beginning. When the PSI ship and Galileo suffer their own 'accidents', it becomes clear that someone is willing to set off a war in the Third Sector to keep their secrets, and the clues point to the highest echelons of power...and deep into Shaw's past.

I was captivated by the first book in this series, and I especially loved the romance between Elena and Trey, even though it was not the happily ever after that I wished for. In this newest story, Elena is back on the Galileo with her Captain, Greg Foster, where events from the past affect their present with another mystery to solve. The Corps ship Exeter is attacked by Syndicate raiders and even though the PSI ship Orunmila comes to the rescue as well as Galileo, it is damaged beyond recovery, with 97 crew members killed, a prisoner taken and the captain severely injured. Since Exeter’s defenses were disabled and almost nonexistent, sabotage from within is suspected. With help from the captain of Orunmila, key members of Exeter’s crew, and the team from Galileo, the investigation proceeds despite interference from Shadow Ops and others. With action, danger, intrigue and excellent character development, the author has produced another exciting adventure for these exceptional characters. I look forward to reading the next installment with anticipation.Product details

Remnants of Trust A Central Corps Novel Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Bonesteel Katharine Mangold HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews
Elizabeth Bonesteel has written a thought provoking book that encompasses both love stories and duty. The characters are realistic and believable. The story has an unexpected ending. Enjoyable reading.
Excellent space opera. It continues some plot elements from the first book (which I also enjoyed) while expanding the cast of characters and deepening the relationships among those who carried over from the first. I'm a fan of nefarious plots by authority figures being slowly uncovered by scrappy protagonists.
Great book about comradeship and leadership in the space Corp. I liked the fellowship and combat skills the shipmates showed. The characters all mesh together as they would have in real life. Sci Fi readers of all genres will like it. The story is very believable. Good relationship with the other nation's captain. Stubborn colonists add to the mix. Betrayal by upper leadership could be true.
I'm so glad I read this book. I'm definitely going to get the third one. Like Elena I find myself missing Treiko. The plot, characters, mystery and conspiracy all deepened. I'm still not sure what to do with the ending. But it is compelling work and I'm going to read the third novel to see how it all works out. I think this is a very good trilogy with unexpected depths. I really liked the PSI captain. Remarkable people. Read the books - enjoy the journey.
I thought that the characterization was great. The dialogue and interaction worked well.
I thought the author did ship-to-ship combat action pretty well, but I think it's weak on action everywhere else. I didn't have the feeling that I knew what was going on. I also thought that for a military organization, the characters are awfully clueless and don't seem to know what they're doing. And their equipment kind of sucks. It's the future, where's their space marine combat armor? Some kind of armored space suit would have been super helpful for the characters several times.
Anyway, my opinion. I still enjoyed the read.
I am so done with Greg and Elena's drama. Elena needs to get her head on straight already. There's one point where I was capslocking at her for being a ninny. There's a scene in the prologue where she makes a judgment call about what she needs to do to protect a shipmate, and it looks crazy from the perspective of an outside--Greg's reaction is completely justified--but her reasoning makes sense to me. As the reader, I am ready for Greg to let go already so we can get on with the mystery.
I can say this, I do appreciate how Bonesteel handles fertility issues.
It was good. I'm invested. I still want to slap Foster and Elena upside their stupid heads. And go postal on the Admiralty. I didn't expect to get this emotionally involved in the series.
There are many things I enjoy about this world, and the way it is built. if there is anything that bothers me it is a sort of disconnect between the outside world view of Elena and her internal dialogs. I know that most sane people do not hold as high an opinion of themselves as others do of them, but for some reason this feels almost fractured. Elena is just not the confident / competent person in her own head as every other person see her. The will they or won't they thing with Foster is also worn out by the end of the book.
That all being said, the world is interesting, and the PSI is interesting. I hope book three spends more time there.
